Gratitude in the Narrow Places

1 Thessalonians 5:18 — “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ
Jesus concerning you.”

Thanksgiving morning carried the familiar scent of cinnamon and clove, warm, comforting, and expectant. I stepped out for a quick errand, thinking only of the missing ingredients needed to complete the day’s meal. But on my way home, the rhythm of the holiday shifted.

A sudden rush of wind, the sharp whir of bicycle tires on the pavement stopped me in my tracks as panic set in, and the jolt of surprise pulled my heart upward in a gasp. In a moment too swift to fully grasp, danger passed within inches of me and I realized that if the driver of the bicycle had taken one more peddle, I would have been on the ground. He was as surprised as I was, as I realized that he did not think how fast he was going and he obviously did not see me in his path. My life flashed before my eyes, and a sense of embarrassment also washed over me as I looked around at the people who were around me that may have been witnesses to an accident, if God had not interceded.

Later, when my breathing slowed and the world steadied again, a quiet awareness settled in, God had spared my life.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 calls us to give thanks in everything, not because everything is good, but because God is present. Gratitude is not denial; it is recognition, an acknowledgment that even in the narrow places, the near misses, the sudden shocks,
Christ is near and His hand is steady.

As I recalled the near collision, I reflected on what rose within me, the pounding heartbeat, the trembling relief, the sudden clarity about how fragile life is. When we find ourselves in the near misses in our lives, let these sensations become invitations to a deeper communion with God. Moments like this peel back the layers of ordinary living and remind us that every breath is grace, every step is mercy, every preserved moment is an undeserved gift from a loving Father.

And in that realization, thankfulness becomes more than a polite response, it becomes worship. It becomes a way of abiding in Christ, recognizing His nearness not only in quiet places of prayer but in the loud, unexpected intersections of life. To give thanks in everything is to say, “Lord, I see You here, too.”

Today, let your preserved life lead you deeper into the One who holds it. Let gratitude become the rhythm of your walk with Him, shaping your perspective, anchoring your heart, and drawing you ever closer to His faithful presence.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for sparing my life. Thank You for Your unseen protection, Your nearness in moments when danger brushes close, and Your peace that settles my heart afterward. Teach me to give thanks in everything, not only in abundance and celebration, but also in close calls and unexpected moments. Help me to walk in a deeper trust and abiding relationship with You, who holds my life in Your hands. May gratitude shapes my days and draws me closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
